Open source software

Open source software (OSS) is any software with its source code made freely available by its copyright holder. This allows any person to study the code and modify and/or distribute it however they want. Software developed this way can be added to by the public, turning developing the software into a collaborative project.

End of 1997, Eric Raymond published The Cathedral and the Bazaar, a reflective analysis of the hacker community and free software principles.
