Pulse Code Modulation

Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) is one of the earliest made types of audio compression, and was the most used until more formats came available. It uses a sampling method to compress the data. It samples the audio at regular times throughout the file, and by only saving the frequency and amplitude at some points, in order to reduce the amount of data that needs to be saved. Decreasing the frequency of this sampling reduces the file size, but not enough sampling can degrade the quality of the audio.
